Omicron scare: Tight screening at Hyderabad airport

Hyderabad: With the emergence of Omicron variant of the coronavirus, Telangana health authorities intensified screening of passengers arriving from 12 at-risk countries from Tuesday midnight.

Director of public health, Dr G Srinivasa Rao, said passengers coming in from non-risk countries will also be tested if they show Covid-19 symptoms during thermal screening. Authorities have also decided to test five percent of all foreign passengers at random as part of the enhanced surveillance system in place.

In view of the Omicron variant, we have strengthened our surveillance at the airport with a 24x7 mechanism in place. Ten medical teams have been deployed and we are coordinating with the airport health authorities,” said Dr Rao.

“Every passenger arriving from 12 at-risk countries will be tested and quarantined if found positive and monitored. The ones testing negative will be allowed to go home but they will have to be in quarantine and monitored. In due course of time, if anyone of them tests positive, their contacts will be traced, identified and tested as well,” added the top health official.

Passengers who test positive will be shifted to designated isolation centre at the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS), Gachibowli.

All passengers travelling from port of origin like South Africa, Botswana, Germany, UK, Holland, Denmark, Australia, Hong Kong, Italy, Belgium, Hong Kong and Czech Republic will have to wait at the airport till they receive the test report.
