Tech glitch leaves airport runway dark for 20 mins

Panaji: Flyers making a last minute air dash for Goa to celebrate the New Year had a mild scare on Friday after the runway lights malfunctioned at Goa International Airport and the runway went dark, affecting flight operations.

Indian Navy sources and airport officials said the disruption lasted for a short while and was rectified in around 20 minutes. Despite the high frequency of operations, airlines reported that arrivals and departures were disrupted for just 10-15 minutes.

“As per information received from air traffic control, the runway lights were not available. They have been rectified now and operations have returned to normal,” said Goa airport director Gagan Malik. He had issued an update for passengers and airlines on social media asking them to expect a delay in arrivals and departures of flights.

The Indian Navy’s electrical team rectified the fault and conducted a full inspection of the electrical circuits and ensured that the lights were restored.

The airport at Dabolim operates out of the naval air base, INS Hansa, and the aerodrome is managed by the Indian Navy.

SpiceJet flight SG-8645 from Delhi and Indigo flight 6E-806 from Bengaluru had to circle around while the Navy rectified the malfunction on the runway.
