2.2 kg of gold seized from four passengers at Coimbatore airport

Coimbatore: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 2.2 kg of gold, worth Rs 1.10 crore, from four passengers at the Coimbatore International Airport in the early hours Wednesday.

Officials said the four people were carriers who visited Sharjah on a tourist visa a few days ago and smuggled the gold to Tamil Nadu.

On the basis of specific intelligence, the officials of the DRI, Coimbatore unit, intercepted and questioned the passengers -- Sagubar Sadiq Syed Mohamed, Nasardeen Mohamed Thambi, Kaleel Raghuman Mustafa and Thasthakeer Kajamytheen. All hailed from Ramanathapuram district.

They arrived at the Coimbatore international airport from Sharjah in an Air Arabia flight. They had concealed the gold in their rectums and pockets of trousers, officials said.
