‘Counter magnet town’ near Shimla airport on the cards

Shimla: To transfer the urbanisation load from Shimla, a counter magnet town near airport has been proposed in the ‘Development Plan 2041’, to accommodate approximately one lakh future population.

Satellite towns in Ghandal, Naldhera, Fagu and Chamiyana to accommodate 5,000-10,000 have also been proposed. In the transit oriented development proposal of bypass road and its integration with existing and new development — counter magnet town and satellite towns — are also on the cards.

The Draft Development Plan is meant for Shimla planning area, including Shimla Municipal Corporation, Kufri Special Area Development Authority, Shoghi, Ghanahatti and additional planning area.

Urban development minister Suresh Bhardwaj on Tuesday launched the draft of Shimla Development Plan here. He said that development plan was being prepared after 40 years and was an historical development.

“It will help in planned development, besides dealing with various issues,” he added. The town would have GIS-based development plan, the minister said, adding that department officials and experts had held detailed deliberation of the key proposals before the finalisation of draft.

The plan also talks about integration of ropeways and rapid transport system in order to reduce the existing traffic on roads. It also has the proposal for multimodal hubs, tunnels, multilevel parking and junction improvement throughout the city.

Beside, dedicated freight mobility improvement; heritage walks in core area, agro-based tourism, ecotourism, forest tourism of walking/running trails and sky bridges have been proposed.

In the proposed plan, residential land use has been changed from 5.51% out of total planning area to 12.15%. Out of developed area, the residential area has been increased from 56.44% to 63.25%. Stating that commercial development is prime factor to cater the robust urban development, the proposed plan the area under commercial use has been increased from 0.41% to 0.53%.
