One taxiway at Surat airport shut for 45 days

Surat: One of the two taxiways at Surat airport has been closed for 45 days. The airport authorities, however, said that the closure will not impact flight operations.

Airport officials said that the taxiway and its adjoining apron are being given final touches to improve their efficiency. “Once the ongoing construction is over, the taxiway’s usability will improve,” an official said. “The work will add to the existing infrastructure in multiple ways.”

The taxiway has been closed from January 27. According to an airport official, “There are two taxiways at Surat international airport, known as Alpha and Bravo. The extension of the apron area was completed till Bravo.” The official added: “But due to the operational taxiway, some work was pending and to complete that work, operations at Bravo have been shut temporarily.”

Officials at the airport said that SOP has been issued by the Surat airport authorities and all airlines concerned have been alerted. “Stakeholders have been informed about the development work for the safe operations of aircraft,” the official said. “Exhaustive discussions and deliberations have been held in the matter.”

In the case of operations of multiple flights at the same time, two taxiways will help manage them well, the official said. He added: “One taxiway can be used by the arriving flight and the other by the departing flight.” The closure of Bravo taxiway will facilitate the execution of merging the ongoing extension of apron & PTT work with the existing apron/Bravo taxiway. After completion of this project, six new parking stands for A-320 type of aircraft will be ready. In all, 18 new parking stands are to be constructed in this ongoing project. After the completion, Surat airport will have 23 parking stands for A-320 type of aircraft.
