Passengers can now buy liquor at discounted rate at Delhi Airport

Delhi: At least six liquor shops containing a wide gamut of foreign and Indian brands may come up at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi soon. Passengers will soon be able to buy premium liquor at a discounted rate even if they are travelling on domestic routes.

Six liquor shops are expected to open at the three terminals of the airport in the coming days, the Times of India (TOI) reported. The officials said that the liquor stores would come up at the arrival and departure sections of terminals 1,2 and 3 and are expected to be operational by March.

The report suggests that the new liquor stores at the domestic section may be alternate to the international arrival terminal's duty-free shops. Under the new excise policy of the Delhi government, at least ten liquor shops can be opened at domestic and international terminals.

The Excise Department of the Delhi government has permitted licensees to shift their allotted liquor shops in non-conforming areas of the city to authorised market places in the same zones, reported news agency PTI.

There are 67 wards with non-conforming areas where licences were issued for opening liquor vents. Now, these 134 shops may shift to authorise areas and start operation as per decision taken after a report by a committee formed by the government," PTI reported.

The new excise policy also allows the stores to attract customers by offering them gifts and discounts, the TOI report said.

An official told TOI that people going to Gurugram and Haryana to buy liquor will now buy it in Delhi as alcohol is cheaper here after discounts.

"The airport is one of the best places to sell premium and expensive brands of liquor,"the official said.
