Gold biscuits worth Rs 1.03 crore seized at Chandigarh airport

Ludhiana: In a big success for the Customs comissionerate Ludhiana, its officers deployed at Chandigarh International Airport, Mohali have foiled a smuggling attempt and seized 18 gold biscuits worth Rs. 1.03 crore from a passenger.

The seizure took place on Tuesday and the passenger who was carrying this gold has been arrested by the customs authorities.

According to a statement issued by Vrindaba Gohil, Commissioner of Customs, Ludhiana, “On February 8, 2022, acting on intelligence, the officers intercepted a male passenger arriving from Sharjah in Air India Flight No. IX 188 while he was trying to cross the green channel. On scanning some suspicious item was observed in his hand bag and upon checking his hand bag items concealed in white medical tape were found. On opening the same 18 gold biscuits weighing 2100gm valued at Rs. 1.03 crore were recovered after which the passenger was arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.”

Gohil also said, “Further, in past one month the Ludhiana Customs staff deployed at Chandigarh International Airport, Mohali has been very vigilant and have closely monitored the smuggling activities. On January 28, 2022, while rummaging of Air India Flight No. IX 188 arriving from Sharjah, the customs staff found a taped pouch concealed in the cavity of the lavatory on the right side of the rear of the aircraft from which 220.840 gms of gold valued at Rs. 10,83,268 was extracted and subsequently seized as unclaimed. Also, on January 4, 2022, the customs Airport staff intercepted a lady passenger trying to cross the green channel who was carrying 22 carat Gold jewellery weighing 97.52gm valued at Rs. 4,50,021. A total recovery of duty and penalty amounting to Rs. 1,83,258 was made from her under the Customs Act, 1962”
