Regular international flights likely to resume in April: Reports

After a 23-month ban, regular international flights may resume services in March/April.

According to CNBC TV18 reports, the government will make the decision whether or not to open up to regular international travel in the summer schedule.

International flights are set to resume soon with the aviation ministry setting an internal target of resumption of the services once domestic capacity touches 80% of pre-Covid flights. "Since domestic flights are returning fast, it may happen soon," said a person in the know told ET.

Domestic airlines operated more than 2,800 flights before the pandemic in 2020. On Sunday, they operated 2,058 flights and to reach 80% of the pre-Covid level, the number has to go over 2,200.

The aviation ministry had earlier announced plans to resume regular international flights starting December 15, 2021, but rescinded that order due to the rise in Omicron cases.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in January had extended the suspension on international flights from and to India till February 28 in view of rising coronavirus cases across the world.

Flights under the air bubble arrangements had begun in late 2020.

International flights were first suspended in March 2020 after a nationwide lockdown was imposed to tackle the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
