Rs 25 lakh gold seized at Jaipur airport, passenger came from Dubai

Jaipur: The customs officials at Jaipur International Airport apprehended a passenger with over 500 gms of gold who landed from Dubai on Sunday night. Since the value of the gold was more than the allowed limit of Rs 20 lakh, the passenger was arrested. Officials claimed that he appears to be in his late 20s and hails from Delhi.

“Based on suspicion, customs officers at Jaipur International Airport intercepted a passenger who arrived by SpiceJet flight from Dubai at 9.15pm on Sunday. During personal search, yellowish granular paste packed in two transparent polyethylene capsules was found duly concealed inside the rectum. The weight of the precious metal was 512.700 gms and the gold was of 99.50% purity, valued at Rs.25,37,865. It was extracted from the paste and was seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962.The accused has been arrested. Further investigation is on,” said an official statement.

Officials claimed that the passenger worked as a taxi driver in Dubai and was paid Rs 20,000 and the ticket to India to get the gold to Jaipur. “During checking, he appeared to be nervous and in the initial questioning told us about the concealed gold. He said that someone was supposed to receive him at the airport though he was not aware of that person’s identity,” said an official. Earlier this month, customs officials had seized around 600 grams of gold from a passenger who landed from Dubai and detained two who had come to receive the man. Before this, customs officials intercepted a woman passenger and seized over 600 gms of gold from her which she had hidden in her undergarments. Prior to this, the passenger was apprehended with around 500 gms of gold.
