Air India flight welcomed in Maldives with a water cannon salute - here's why

Air India flight AI-267 to the Maldives was welcomed at Male airport on Monday with a water cannon salute to commemorate 46 years of air service between the two countries.

A short clip showing the customary welcome was shared on Twitter by Air India. The tweet informed that Air India operated its first flight from Trivandrum to Male in February 1976.

"#Fly AI: AI-267 was welcomed with a water cannon salute as it landed at Male airport #MACLmedia today to commemorate 46 years of air service between India and Maldives. Air India operated its first flight from Trivandrum to Male in Feb 1976," Air India tweeted.

The 45-second clip shows water propelling from two cannons on opposite sites while the Air India plane moves in between.

After 69 years of its nationalisation, Air India formally became part of the Tata Group in January.

Air bubble arrangement between India and Maldives has continued amid the Covid pandemic.

“Transport Bubbles” are temporary arrangements between two countries, aimed at restarting commercial services when regular international flights are suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last week, an Air India Dreamliner landed in London's Heathrow airport during Storm Eunice.

A live stream showed several planes struggling to land at the airport strong gusts of wind blew across the runway. Many of the flights made multiple attempts, some were even diverted, said reports.
