Delhi flight is likely to resume by month-end

Ludhiana: The only flight between Ludhiana and Delhi, which had stopped in October last year, may restart operations by this month-end. Alliance Air, a subsidiary of Air India, the flight operator, had suspended the operations last year “due to ongoing pandemic, poor loads, operation on commercial basis not very encouraging and financially viable”.An Airport Authority of India (AAI) officer said Air India has included Ludhiana flight in the summer schedule and it might resume by March 28. He added that the 72-seater ATR flight had last operated on April 9. “Now the operator wants to restart the flight. We got a call from the operations department of Air India and they asked for a schedule. We had told them that the arrival time can be 2pm and the flight can depart at 2.30pm, but they want us to confirm the arrival time at 3pm and departure time at 3.30pm. This is apparently because the ATR flight, which will fly between Delhi and Ludhiana, reaches from Pathankot to Delhi around 1.15pm. We have confirmed the timings suggested by them,” said the officer.

“One of the main reasons for withdrawal of operations was falling visibility ahead of winter last year, but as it remains more than 5,000 metres in summer, it is a good time for them to resume operations,” he added.

Airport officials said before Covid outbreak, the occupancy was very good, but during the pandemic it fell. They said before the pandemic, at times there would be 69 to 70 passengers on board the flight.

“For restart of operations, the airline needs a station manager and ground operations handling in-charge. Rest of the staff is local, so work can start soon,” said an official.

Residents are waiting for the restart of the flight. “It is important for an industrial city like Ludhiana to have good air connectivity. Unfortunately, the flight remained suspended for around a year. The flight will definitely help the business community, professionals and students,” said Amandeep Singh, a city resident.
