Kolkata airport chalks out plans for Rs 130 crore terminal expansion project

Kolkata: Even as Kolkata airport emerges from the turbulence caused by the pandemic and braces for take off with surge in domestic flights and expected resumption of scheduled international flights, the airport operator has chalked out a two-pronged terminal expansion project. The cost of the development will be around Rs 130 crore.

“We will soon embark on a project to expand both the domestic and international wing of the integrated terminal to add more than 4,000 sq m or around 45,000 sq ft. This will augment the annual capacity of the integrated terminal from 26 million to 28 million,” said Kolkata airport director C Pattabhi.

The current terminal is spread over 2.3 lakh sq m or over 25 lakh sq ft. While it is spread across six levels, the addition will happen in the arrival and departure levels.

The airport will add a building module to the terminal’s international wing at the south-western end to redo the layout of the international departure and arrival floors.

“We are not adding any departure gate or aerobridge to the international wing. The additional space will help make the international wing more spacious and prepare it for a surge in flights and travellers,” the director said.

At present, the integrated terminal has 18 aerobridges of which 12 are in the domestic wing and six in the international wing.
