Runway resurfacing delayed by 2 hrs to let London flight depart

Ahmedabad: In a special case, authorities of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad delayed the start of the runway resurfacing activity by about two hours, so that an international flight can depart, on Tuesday morning. London-bound Air India flight, AI-171 which was scheduled to depart at 7.10am was delayed by at least three hours due to some operational constraints.

The runway resurfacing activity begins at 9am every day and continues till 6pm at the airport, during which the runway is shut for flight movements.

Yet another Air India flight, AI-1919 from Ahmedabad to Nairobi also was delayed due to a technical glitch on Tuesday itself, confirmed sources. “Both the flights had at least 400 international passengers who would have been stranded at the city airport for at least 10-11 hours due to the runway closure. Therefore, under special circumstances, the departure of both these flights was enabled by the SVPI airport operator to avoid passenger inconvenience,” said a source.

The London-bound flight ended up departing at 10.45am according to sources.
