South African man held with heroin worth Rs 56 crore at Mumbai airport

The customs department arrested a South African man at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and seized 8 kg of heroin worth Rs 56 crore from his possession, officials said on Sunday.

The arrested man, identified as Mzize, arrived at the Mumbai airport from Johannesburg on February 26. The customs, upon suspicion, intercepted the man and further checking resulted in the recovery of the smuggled drugs.

The drugs were concealed inside three small bags, an official said.

In his statement to the customs department, Mzize disclosed that the drugs were handed to him in Johannesburg and were meant for smuggling into India.

The official said the man had violated provisions of section 8 of the NDPS act and committed an offence punishable under section 21, section 23 and section 29 of the NDPS act.
