International services set to restart from Vijayawada airport soon

Vijayawada: Development committee of Vijayawada airport is planning to rope in reputed airlines to restart the international services from the city. The committee has discussed a few key development measures including the completion of the works on the integrated terminal at the earliest.

Vijayawada airport registered around 500 per cent growth in terms of passenger footfall and movement of aircraft between 2014 and 2019. The airport handled around 11.4 lakh passengers in the financial year 2018-19 which is the highest ever footfall registered in the city. The footfall gradually reduced and operation of flights came down due to Covid-19.

The maiden international flight service to Singapore received a huge response from the public. It operated with around 85 per cent occupancy.

The service operated by the Indigo was cancelled in June 2019 as the state government decided not to provide viability gap funding for the service thereafter. Though many airline operators did surveys to start direct services to Dubai, Muscat and other Arab countries, no airlines dared to operate the service in view of the Covid-19 situation.

Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas (Nani), and Machilipatnam MP Vallabhaneni Balashouri highlighted the need for operating more international services from city.
