Madurai-Singapore flights to resume

Madurai: Direct flights between Madurai and Singapore that remain suspended since the Covid-19 pandemic struck will resume on March 29. Air India Express will operate the flights twice a week – Tuesday and Saturdays – in the summer schedule till October 29.

The flight from Singapore will start at 5pm local time and reach Madurai at 6.40pm. The return flight will start from Madurai at 9.35pm and reach Singapore at 4.30am. Tamil Nadu chamber of commerce and industry president N Jegatheesan said the services to Singapore are being resumed after much efforts. Travellers and cargo operators said that in the absence of direct flights from Madurai, they depended on Trichy airport, from where two airlines are operating. Trade body representatives are confident that good patronage will increase the frequency of flights.

“More than half the people flying from Trichy to Singapore are from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. Even those from Kanyakumari prefer Madurai to the airport in Thiruvananthapuram as highway connectivity to Madurai is better,” Jegatheesan said.

This increases the number of international destinations directly connected from Madurai to four in three countries.
