In-flight protest against Kerala CM: Congress leader KS Sabarinathan arrested

Kerala police have arrested former MLA and Youth Congress State Vice President KS Sabarinathan in connection with the protest against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inside an IndiGo flight last month. Sabarinathan was summoned for questioning after a WhatsApp conversation purportedly between him and other Youth Congress volunteers surfaced on social media. Police had registered attempt to murder case against the two Youth Congress volunteers for the inflight protest. CPI(M) alleged that Sabarinathan was the main conspirator in the case.

Youth Congress volunteers launched a major protest as police arrested Sabarinathan while court was hearing his bail plea. Tense situation prevails in front of the office of Assistant Commissioner, Sanghumukham. The fresh political slugfest between the Left and Congress after IndiGo imposed a flying ban on Kerala ruling front LDF's Convener EP Jayarajan and two Youth Congress workers in connection with the scuffle onboard the plane carrying state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan last month.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in a reply to the Assembly, said that he escaped from the attack due to timely intervention of Jayarajan and his gunman. He said that the intention of conspirators and attackers became clear from the WhatsApp chat.

Opposition leader VD Satheesan said that the arrest of Sabarinathan was part of a high level conspiracy. "The investigation has revealed that the Youth Congress workers committed level 1 offense, but Jayarajan's was a level 2 offense. Still police are not taking any case against Jayarajan," he said.

The country's largest airline's decision comes a little over a month after the incident on June 13, when the two protestors shouted slogans against the chief minister inside the IndiGo aircraft soon after it landed at Thiruvananthapuram airport from Kannur. Jayarajan, who was also onboard, allegedly pushed aside the two protesters.

A three-week travel ban has been imposed on Jayarajan and a two-week ban each on the two Youth Congress workers, Farzeen Majid and Naveen Kumar, according to sources.

Under the aviation regulations, airlines have the power to ban passengers for varying periods for unruly behaviour. The ban means that the three individuals cannot fly IndiGo for the specified period as they are now included in the no-fly list of the airline.
