Domestic air passenger traffic grows 67% to 5.72 crore in January-June 2022: DGCA

Domestic air passenger traffic grew by nearly 67 percent (year-on-year) to 5.72 crore during the January-June period of this year, according to air traffic data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday.

In the corresponding six months a year ago, domestic airlines had carried around 3.43 crore passengers in the country.

On a monthly basis, the passenger air traffic growth rate domestically soared to 238 percent in June this year over the same month a year ago, data showed.

The passenger load factors -- which means occupancy rates - of SpiceJet, IndiGo, Vistara, Go First, Air India and AirAsia India were 84.1 per cent, 78.6 per cent, 83.8 per cent, 78.7 per cent, 75.4 per cent and 75.8 per cent, respectively, in June 2022.

IndiGo again dominated in terms of air traffic in June. The airline carried 59.83 lakh passengers last month and had a market share of 56.9 per cent.

Go First and Spice Jet both shared the number two slot in terms of market share with 9.5 percent each, the aviation regulator said.

Go First ferried 9.99 lakh passengers during the month, less than SpiceJet’s 10.02 lakh passengers.

A total of 570 passenger related complaints had been received by the scheduled domestic airlines, data showed. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month of June 2022 has been around 0.54.

On-Time Performance (OTP) of scheduled domestic airlines has been computed for four metro airports viz. Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

The DGCA data said in June, AirAsia India had the best on-time performance of 89.8 per cent at four metro airports - Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. While Alliance Air was the worst among major airlines with 66.4 per cent.
