Kolkata-bound passenger caught at Agartala airport with Rs 9.76 cr gold biscuits

Agartala: A Kolkata-bound passenger has been arrested by airport security at Agartala's MBB Airport for allegedly smuggling 16 gold biscuits worth Rs 9.72 cr. The accused has been identified as 40-year-old Biplab Chaudhary.

The seizure and arrest was made on Wednesday. The man was traveling by Air India flight in the morning. He is a resident of Kamarpukurpar.

Choudhary was detained during baggage scanning. During the scanning, the security at the airport found 16 gold biscuits weighing around 1.890 kg.

The man was taken into custody and interrogated for three hours by CISF. Citing sources, the man was handed over to customs.

The airport security could not reveal the destination and source of the gold. The report suggests that the gold was smuggled from Bangladesh. While it may have originated in the middle east and was enroute to West Bengal capital Kolkata. The gold may have been meant for jewellers in Kolkata.

In a similar incident reported from Mumbai on June 18, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department arrested eight passengers at the Mumbai International Airport on charges of smuggling gold dust. The passengers had landed from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. The customs officials also seized a total of 8.4 kg gold valued at Rs 3.9 crore from them.
