Ahmedabad SVPI airport likely to get third terminal as passenger footfall grows

Ahmedabad: To accommodate the growing number of travellers, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad is set to construct a third terminal. Domestic travellers will be served by the facility, according to individuals familiar with the project.

To boost passenger amenities and shorten turnaround times for transiting passengers, the municipal airport is already undertaking refurbishment and expansion.

"Two years later, a new terminal is required to meet the increased passenger footfall. To provide better connectivity and smooth transition, a new terminal for domestic passengers is a natural extension to the current renovation and expansion plans," said sources to TOI.

When the Airports Authority of India (AAI) managed the airport, a new terminal was already planned, and 2019–20 saw a peak of 1.1 crore passengers. The expansion plan, however, was never implemented.

Around 27.37 lakh passengers travelled through the city airport in the four months of FY 2022–23, from April to July. According to this, the anticipated passenger volume at the SVPI airport may be around 82 lakh.

The domestic and international terminals are currently expanding their floor space.

"The floor space is being expanded to accommodate more passengers and boarding gates are being added to ease passenger movement at the domestic terminal. This will help in handling more flights at a time," a source said.
