Air India's customer service agent held for aiding gold smugglers at Chennai airport

Chennai: A team of Customs sleuths on Friday arrested an Air India staff for helping with gold smuggling at the Chennai international airport and seized gold worth Rs 43.41 lakh from him.

According to reports, the arrested person was a customer service agent working for Air India Airport Services Ltd (AIASL). 998 grams of smuggled gold was recovered from his possession, the Customs department told the media.

Based on a tip-off, the Air India staff was halted by the Customs team near the duty-free shops at the arrival hall of the airport's international on Friday, Times of India (TOI) said in a report. When the staff was searched, four bundles of golden rubbery spread were recovered from him, the news report said. The paste yielded 988 grams of 24 karat gold when extracted.

According to the investigators, the gold bundle was reportedly handed over to the arrested man by a Sri Lankan passenger in the transit lounge. He arrived in Chennai on a Dubai flight with a connecting flight to Colombo.

Last month, the department arrested two staffers of Indigo Airlines at Kerala's Karipur airport for helping to smuggle 4.9kgs of gold in semi-solid format on September 12. The gold, estimated to be worth Rs 2.5 crores, was found in the baggage of a passenger who left it at the airport and fled.
