Man carrying 1 kg gold in his rectum nabbed by customs at Chennai airport

The Customs officers at the Chennai airport apprehended a man who was bearing over 1kg of gold in his rectum and was carrying 9,400 cigarette sticks in his check-in baggage. The total value of the seized goods amounts to Rs 48.35 lakhs.

The customs official received a tip-off and intercepted a man, who arrived at Chennai airport from Dubai via Emirates Airlines on Thursday.

During examination, the officials found four bundles of gold in rubbery form weighing 1,260 grams concealed in his rectum, which on extraction yielded one gold ingot of 24 karat, weighing 1,083 grams with an estimated value of Rs. 47.41 lakhs.

Officials also found 47 cartons of Esse cigarette packets containing 9,400 sticks, worth less than a lakh, in the passenger's check-in baggage.

In an official statement, the customs department said, "A total of 1,083 grams of gold and 9,400 cigarette sticks, valued at 48.35 lakhs, were seized under the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is under progress."
