Panjim: The newly-constructed Greenfield International Airport at Mopa, which is likely to be commissioned in December, has been granted consent to operate by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).

During its Board meeting held on October 11, the Board decided to grant consent to operate under Air and Water Act to the airport. M/s GMR Goa International Airport Limited had approached Board with the permission for the airport, consisting of passenger terminal building, air traffic control technical building, administration building, cargo and utility building, buildings in airside, etc.

GSPCB Chairman Mahesh Patil confirmed about the grant of consent to operate to the airport facility.

The Board officials last week also conducted a site visit at the airport to see the working of the different equipment installed at the airport, especially the noise monitoring, waste disposal, etc.

The foundation stone for the ambitious second airport in Goa was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2016.

The Mopa Airport is being constructed in four phases with an annual passenger capacity of 4.4 million in phase I, 5.8 million phase II, 9.4 million in phase III and 13.1 million in phase IV.

The airport has an ultimate capacity of 28 million passengers per annum with a provision for dedicated cargo facility, by end of four phases.
