Alliance Air Starts Commercial Flight To Rourkela

Commercial flights to Rourkela – one of the two cities hosting this year's Men's Hockey World Cup – have begun. A successful trial run was conducted at the airport on December 30th, and Alliance Air will now be connecting the town with Bhubaneshwar with a daily service.

On January 7th, flight Service between Bhubaneswar (BBI) and Rourkela (RRK) began under the government's regional connectivity scheme called UDAN. Alliance Air operated the flight, deploying one of its ATR aircraft, which was flagged off by India's Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

According to Alliance Air's website, the daily service between Bhubaneshwar and Rourkela has a scheduled departure time of 14:55 and arrival of 15:50. The return leg leaves RRK at 16:15 and land in BBI at 17:10. One-way fare on the route start at ₹2,830 ($34).

Odisha's Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was happy with the development and said that the new service would offer seamless connectivity to sports fans coming to celebrate hokey in the state.

Before this, Rourkela's airport was mainly used for private flights and struggled to start commercial operations, mainly due to inadequate infrastructure. Work to upgrade it was slow, and the condition of its apron and taxiway had raised questions last year about whether the facility could be operational before the tournament.
