Air India fined Rs 10 lakh for not reporting unruly passenger behaviour on Paris-New Delhi flight

Aviation regulator Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Tuesday imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakhs on Tata-owned Air India for not reporting to it the December 6 incident where a passenger onboard its flight allegedly relieved himself on a vacant seat & blanket of a fellow passenger & delaying in referring the matter to its Internal Committee.

In a statement on Tuesday, DGCA said the incidents of passenger misbehaviour occurred on the AI-142 flight from Paris to New Delhi on December 6, 2022. This is the second time in less than a week that the watchdog has taken enforcement action against the airline in connection with unruly passenger behaviour.

Earlier in January the DGCA had issued a show cause notice to the Accountable Manager of Air India after two incidents of passenger misbehaviour occurring the airline's flight AI-142 came to the notice of the regulator. The show cause notice said why enforcement action "should not be taken against them for dereliction of their regulatory obligations".

Two incidents occurred on the Air India flight.

While one passenger who was caught smoking in the lavatory, was drunk and not adhering to the crew instructions; another passenger allegedly relieved himself on a vacant seat and blanket of a fellow female passenger when she went to the lavatory.

"After perusal of the reply submitted by Air India through email dated January 6, prima facie it emerges that provisions related to the handling of unruly passengers as per DGCA CAR Section -3, Series-M, Part-VI have not been complied with," the press release said.

DGCA said It has been noted that the response of the airline has been "lackadaisical and delayed".

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued a notice to Delhi Police, Air India and the DGCA in this incident.
