Air India penalised for denying entry to passenger at Mumbai airport

Chennai: A city consumer court has penalised Air India for denying a passenger entry despite him reaching before the stipulated deadline.

V Venkatraman had booked a flight ticket for his wife and himself to travel from Mumbai to Chennai in Air India Express. The flight was scheduled to depart from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport at 1pm. A few hours before the journey, the couple got a message informing them that they had to report for checking two hours before the departure and gates will be closed 45 minutes prior to departure.

Since they had booked a flight to Chennai, they arrived at the domestic terminal at the airport. But they were asked to report at the international terminal. So, they had to rush to the other terminal which is 4km away. Though the couple managed to reach there at 12.10pm they were denied entry.

The complainants claimed in their petition before the District Consumer Grievance Redressal Commission, Chennai (South), that there was no mention about the terminal in their e-ticket.

Evidence submitted by Venkatraman clearly showed that they reached 50 minutes before the departure. So, the commission recently ordered Air India and ticket booking site Goibibo to refund the ticket amount of 9,665 and pay another 55,000 as compensation to the complainants for service deficiency and mental agony caused to them.
