Bengaluru civic body lifts curbs on non-veg hotels near Aero India; meat sale still banned

Bengaluru: Brihat Bengaluru Maha Nagarpalike (BBMP) on Saturday loosened the rules after only a few days of enforcing a blanket ban on the sale of meat and a prohibition on hotels serving non-vegetarian cuisine within a 10-kilometre radius of Yelahanka Air Force Station for the aero show, TOI reported.

Non-vegetarian hotels are now permitted to remain open throughout the performance as long as they properly dispose of their animal waste in a scientific manner.

The civic organisation had mandated restrictions on the operation of non-vegetarian hotels and the sale of beef, chicken, and fish from January 30 to February 20.

The Palike claimed that the prohibition was necessary to ensure the safe and successful operation of Aero India 2023 because meat attracts birds, particularly large ones like kites, which raises the risk of bird strikes (collision of birds with aircraft).

However, many residents strongly opposed the ban on non-vegetarian meals and expressed their outrage. The Indian Air Force received numerous complaints, according to sources in the defence ministry.

The aerospace safety and inspection officer from Yelahanka Air Force Station subsequently brought up the matter with BBMP representatives and talked about the issue's potential effects on the general public and livelihood.
