The Air India Express cabin crew fraternity is planning to go on a mass sick leave against the decision of Air India Express to implement a series of major cost-cutting measures under the accommodation policy issued on June 8, 2023.
This has sparked a dispute between the management and its employees. The crew members’ move will directly affect its flight operations across India, including the Pune airport.
Under the policy, the cabin crew members are being forced to share rooms during layovers, leading to concerns about privacy and well-being.
Mirror contacted airline officials who informed that the crew members have taken their grievances to the Regional Labour Commissioner, where they were given the next date of reconciliation i.e. on June 23, 2023.
The new policy of forcing cabin crew members to share rooms during layovers has caused distress among the employees. According to the airline staff members, the airline justifies this decision by claiming that it has adopted the practice from Air Asia India, with which it recently merged.
However, the cabin crew argues that Air India Express operates differently from Air Asia India and that such a policy is not applicable or necessary. The sharing of rooms not only compromises the privacy and well-being of the crew but also raises concerns about their rest and concentration levels, which can impact flight safety.
Moreover, there is a significant disparity and discrimination in the salary revision. The revised salary structure heavily favours new recruits, providing them with higher increments as compared to more experienced crew members. This unfair treatment has created a sense of dissatisfaction and a feeling of undervaluation among the senior cabin crew members. Crew salary has reduced while the salary of CEO has increased by over 30 percent.
Besides these grievances, the management has shown a merciless approach towards a physically challenged cabin crew member. Despite the employee's dedicated service of five years, an unfortunate accident left them paralysed and confined to a wheelchair. The airline management has failed to provide suitable ground job accommodations and discontinued the employee's contract after a fixed-term period. This callous treatment has led to legal proceedings initiated by the employee.
The decisions made by Air India Express management have sparked a wave of discontent among employees, who believe that these policies are strategically designed to push out experienced staff members. The management's preferential treatment of junior crew members, their abandonment of a physically challenged employee, and their disregard for the well-being and seniority of experienced crew members have caused significant unrest within the company.
