7 taxi touts held from Kol airport

Kolkata: More than half a dozen taxi touts were arrested from in and around Kolkata airport premises on Tuesday and slapped with stringent extortion charges by the Bidhannagar City Police. The move partially rid the airport of the menace of taxi touts for the time being.

According to officials of the airport division of Bidhannagar Commissionerate, seven persons were picked up during a raid when touts were negotiating with passengers. “We initiated a drive against men who’ve been illegally approaching passengers. We will continue it for a few days and have slapped them with sections pertaining to extortion and criminal conspiracy,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.

The arrests came after a passenger approached the officers of airport traffic guard, complaining that he was being harassed by touts. “Being denied, the drivers threatened the passengers and said they’re the only option at the airport,” the officer said. The accused are Aktarul Hossain, Sadhu Singh, Abdul Ali, Mithu Mistri, Sujoy Sarkar, Debu Ghosh and Dinabandhu Tiwari.
