IndiGo Welcomes New Batch Of Trainee Airbus A320 Pilots

Even as IndiGo expands its reach within India and overseas, and places mega aircraft orders, it continues to train new-generation pilots as part of its cadet pilot program. The airline, in partnership with Skyborne Airline Academy, recently celebrated the graduation of more than 75 trainee pilots who will operate the carrier’s Airbus A320 family of aircraft.

India’s largest carrier IndiGo has been running its cadet pilot program for years. It has partnered with several flight schools globally and in India, one of which is Skyborne Airline Academy in the US. Together, they recently celebrated the first group of trainees who graduated successfully.

The partnership between Skyborne and IndiGo involves the trainees undergoing 12 months of US FAA 141 commercial pilot training in Vero Beach, Florida. They then return to India to convert their US FAA license to an Indian DGCA license and finish with a combined MCC and A320 type rating in Abu Dhabi. Lee Woodward, CEO of Skyborne, commented,

“It is our privilege to see 77 bright trainees graduate as resilient and highly sought-after Second Officers. We are proud that amidst uncertainty, our promise of quality, through the best education and experience possible, has and will continue to support our graduates in their pathways to becoming successful pilots for India’s leading airline.”

Even before the flight training begins, candidates for IndiGo’s cadet pilot program go through a rigorous selection process. Once they meet the educational and age requirements, IndiGo and Skyborne put them through the following four stages of the selection process:

Stage 1 – Online assessment conducted by Skyborne that tests on seven different parameters, namely: work-related behavior, monitoring ability, reaction speed, multi-tasking capability, complex control, applied numeracy, and sense of direction.

Stage 2 – Symbiotics coordination test and personal interview conducted by Skyborne in person.

Stage 3 – Group Discussion conducted by IndiGo, in person.

Stage 4 – Personal Interview with IndiGo, in person.
