16 gold biscuits worth over Rs 1 crore recovered from Varanasi airport's toilet

Varanasi: Customs officials recovered 16 gold biscuits, which were 1.87 kg in weight, from a toilet of Lal Bahadur Shastri International airport in Varanasi. Cost of recovered gold was estimated Rs 1.12 crores.

Customs officials on Friday disclosed that with the landing of Air India flight IX 184 from Sharjah-Varanasi at LBSI Airport on May 31 their team during had mounted strict vigil during clearance of passenger arrived by it. During the same action, the wash rooms of airport were also checked by the staff.

In one of the top of concealment urinals, one black plastic packet was found lying abandoned, said the officials adding this unattended packet appeared to be little bit heavy due to containing metallic object. When this packet was opened 16 gold biscuits were found inside it when authorized valuer was called.

During the examination of valuer the weight of 16 gold biscuits of foreign origin was found as 1866.100 grams, said officials adding, it valued Rs. 1,12,52,583. Following these exercises the gold biscuits were seized under the provisions of the Customs Act 1962. Further investigation is continued in this connection, they added.
