One out of three flyers at Kolkata airport uses DigiYatra

Kolkata: Only flyers who enroll with DigiYatra, the paperless check-in and boarding services using facial recognition technology, are being allowed entry into the domestic terminal through gate 3. At the other two gates - 1 and 2 - flyers with and without DigiYatra have separate entry channels. Since the imposition of restrictions at gate 3, DigiYatra usage has shot up by 50%, officials said.

The move to restrict entry of non-DigiYatra flyers through gate 3 is to encourage more passengers to switch to the system that is currently in operation at Kolkata airport along with Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Varanasi and Vijayawada. More flyers use gate 3 because check-in counters of IndiGo Airlines, which operates over 100 daily flights out of the city, are near this gate.

"In April, the use of DigiYatra that allows paperless transit and enables flyers to skip queues at the entry and security check was 5% at Kolkata airport. In May, the ratio increased to 11% and in June, 19%. Now that we have restricted entry through gate 3, the DigiYatra usage in the past seven days has gone up to 30%," said an airport official.

The highest single-day use of the DigiYatra system was on July 21 by 7,173 people, or 37% of those who travelled out of Kolkata airport that day. Since its introduction on April 1, over 4.5 lakh passengers have used DigiYatra till date.

The official said that around 18%-20% flyers are now using the DigiYatra service on their own. Most of them are frequent flyers who have experienced the benefit of using the service that has resulted in substantial reduction in time by avoiding queues at the entrance as well as security check. "A flyer who has downloaded the app takes less than 10-12 seconds to enter the terminal and even less to reach the frisking point at security check," he pointed out.
