City airport crosses 20 lakh passenger mark in just 4 yrs

Prayagraj: The Civil Enclave (Prayagraj airport) located at Bamrauli has achieved the distinction of catering to over 20 lakh air passengers in just over four years of becoming operational.

With this, it has become the third airport in the state after Lucknow and Varanasi to achieve this milestone.

The distinction is significant given the fact that Prayagraj airport is a domestic airport whereas Lucknow and Varanasi are international facilities.

Prayagraj airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 16, 2018 before Kumbh 2019. However, the new terminal was opened for passengers only on January 1, 2019.

Since then till June 2023, the airport has catered to 20.50 lakh air passengers. During this period, more than 26583 flights also operated from the airport.

Interestingly, had it not been the first and second wave of Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in a sudden dip in terms of number of passengers arriving or leaving the city through flights, the feat of crossing 20 lakh passengers could have been achieved by the airport in last year only.

During the first wave of pandemic, flight operations was badly affected at the airport because of the lockdown (from March 25 to May 24, 2020). Likewise, operations were again adversely hit during the second wave when there were relatively fewer flights in the months of May and June.

Earlier, the airport reached a huge milestone on September 8, 2021 when the number of air passengers crossed 10 lakh mark since beginning of its operations (January 1, 2019).
