Vasco: The Congress on Thursday made damning allegations targeting the BJP governments at the Centre and Goa for pressuring international airlines to shift from Dabolim Airport to Manohar International Airport at Mopa to benefit the GMR group.
Congress leader Elvis Gomes, addressing a press conference, said that a conspiracy has been hatched to close down the Dabolim Airport which was built in 1955 and exhorted even traditional BJP voters not to vote for BJP as a mark of protest. He said that the highly convenient Dabolim-Gatwick sector would be the first casualty if Air India succumbs to government pressure disregarding the interests of the people of Goa who have been patronising Air India.
“People are emotionally attached to Dabolim airport. However, the government is working in the interest of GMR who is running Mopa Airport. Presently due to less operations, it is facing loss and hence trying to pull operations from Dabolim. This practice will definitely close down Dabolim,” he said.
Adv Melwin Fernandes, President of Vasco Congress Block, Peter D’Souza, President of Cortalim Congress Block, Niyazi Shaikh and others were present.
“BJP government is not working in the interest of the public, but it wants GMR to earn profits. I appeal to people not to give a single vote to BJP,” he said, condemning the conspiracy of BJP.
“The civil aviation ministry and state government is pressuring international airlines like Air India, Qatar Airways and others to shift from Dabolim to Mopa. If international operations from Dabolim are disturbed then sooner than later Dabolim will close down. BJP should clarify whether it is not pressuring and should promise that Dabolim will not shut,” Gomes said demanding Transport Minister and Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho as also all MLAs from Mormugao taluka to come clear on what the government was up to.
