‘Will visit Delhi and request Centre to allow Dabolim airport ops to continue’

Porvorim: Decisions pertaining to commercial operations of airlines and airports fall in the jurisdiction of the civil aviation ministry at the Centre, said chief minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday. He was responding to the opposition’s concern about international flights shifting to Manohar International Airport at Mopa.

Sawant assured the assembly that he would lead a three-member delegation to meet the civil aviation minister to request that the Dabolim airport run by the Airports Authority of India continues to operate.

“As soon as this assembly session concludes, I will take Mauvin Godinho and Rohan Khaunte to Delhi and speak to the ministry to ask it not to shut down Dabolim or allow more flights to shift,” he said.

Several opposition MLAs told the CM that international charter operators such as Aeroflot and TUI have decided to shift flights to Mopa in the coming tourist season. Sawant said that he would seek information about this and present it to the House in the coming week.

Opposition leader Yuri Alemao, GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai, and Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa argued that the closure of Dabolim is imminent with the state government doing little to keep its earlier assurances.
