Collector calls AAI authorities to discuss runway expansion

Trichy: The prolonged land acquisition process for the runway expansion at Trichy International Airport has prompted District Collector M Pradeep Kumar to summon a consulting team from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for a crucial discussion. The aim is to address the persistent challenges associated with the project and ensure its completion by the end of September.

The AAI had previously requested approximately 510.30 acres of land for the expansion, including 164 acres of defense land, to extend the runway from 8,000 feet to 12,500 feet. This enhancement would enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft. Unfortunately, the proposal has been pending for almost 13 years due to delays in acquiring the necessary land from both the state and Union governments.

In light of these circumstances, collector M Pradeep Kumar conducted an inspection of the land acquisition process and engaged in discussions with officials concerned on Tuesday. Apart from the land required for the runway expansion, additional land is necessary for ancillary infrastructure, such as a signal tower, as highlighted by the collector. He acknowledged that certain issues need resolution before progressing further.
