Man caught with 6.5kg of smuggled gold worth Rs 4 crore

Bengaluru: In the biggest gold bust in recent times at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday nabbed a domestic passenger who attempted to smuggle in gold pieces weighing 6.5kg and worth Rs 4 crore.

The man had boarded the flight at Indore. Probe revealed he retrieved the gold pieces placed under the seat of the plane by an accomplice on the aircraft's previous international leg from Dubai to Indore.

Sources said the mega gold smuggling bid was foiled soon after the 35-year-old suspect, later identified as a resident of Chennai, landed at KIA here on an IndiGo airline flight. The DRI Bengaluru unit had reached the arrival area on a specific tip-off that large quantity of gold was being smuggled into Bengaluru on Friday using the domestic air route.

Investigators intercepted the Chennai man and inspection of his handbag revealed six pieces of gold biscuits each weighing 1kg and a half cut piece of gold weighing 500 gram. The DRI team seized the smuggled gold which is estimated to be worth Rs 4 crore as per its present market value in India.
