More flights coming to Chennai Airport soon as AAI plans big modifications

Chennai's airport is set to undergo significant changes to accommodate more domestic flights during peak hours. As per a ToI report, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to modify the old international departure terminal (T4) and an unused arrival terminal on the ground floor to serve domestic flights. These additions will create two domestic terminals, one on each side of the integrated international terminal, with interlinking facilities for transit passengers.

The unused ground floor of the old terminal, vacant since 2013, will be transformed to handle domestic passengers. The necessary modifications and facilities will be added after a security inspection, followed by the hiring of a contractor for signage and facility changes, ToI report stated.

The ground floor arrival terminal will feature three baggage conveyors, and the first floor will be revamped to accommodate domestic departures. This expansion is expected to increase the airport's passenger handling capacity to 19 million per year, a significant boost from the current capacity of less than 15 million passengers annually.

With the conversion of terminals for domestic passengers, Chennai Airport is likely to receive more flights during the summer schedule. Some flights will be rescheduled outside peak hours to alleviate congestion during busy periods, as the airport presently manages over 30 domestic arrivals and departures in the mornings and evenings.
