Kozhikode airport director to soon submit report on RESA development; deadline ends in 10 days

Kondotty: The director of Kozhikode International Airport, S Suresh, stated that he would soon submit a detailed report to the Airports Authority of India outlining the steps taken for reducing the runway length and the progress of land acquisition by the Kerala government for the RESA (Runway End Safety Area) development.

The AAI had sought an explanation from the airport director regarding the measures taken to shorten the runway, as there has been no response from the state government despite repeated requests.

With only 10 days remaining for the deadline set by union aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to acquire land for the development of RESA atKaripur airport, the uncertainty surrounding land acquisition persists. In the aftermath of the 2020 flight crash, an expert committee recommended increasing the clearance on both sides of the runway from 90 metre to 240 metre. The airports authority decided to cut 320 metre from the runway, reducing the runway length from 2860 to 2540 metre. However, this move sparked widespread protests, with concerns raised about the airport's development and the impact on wide-bodied aircraft services. To address these concerns, the state government initially decided to acquire 18.5 acre for RESA but later reduced it to 14.5 acres. The land acquisition process faced delays because of local opposition, which continues.
