Air service from Bhopal to Jabalpur, Gwalior still missing from radar

Bhopal airport is undoubtedly excellent in infrastructure but when it comes to connectivity, the State capital appears to be poor. The air connectivity from the capital of the State to the major cities of the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, is strong but efforts to increase regional connectivity are not being successful. The Bhopal airport could not attract airlines to connect Bhopal with other locations including Jabalpur, Gwalior and Bilaspur for a long time. Air India was the first to add air connectivity to small towns. Actually, the airlines are not interested in doing so. At that time it was a Government company. The company also opened a regional office for the first time in the capital with the objective of increasing regional connectivity.

Vishrut Acharya was made Regional Manager. The company started it with Jabalpur-Gwalior flight, but both these flights could not run for long. Last year, Alliance Air started direct air service to Jabalpur, Gwalior and Bilaspur, but the company could not get the expected number passengers. As a result, all the three flights were grounded in no time.

In order to promote air service to small cities, the Government of India had started Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme some time back. Under this scheme, a target was set to provide air services at low fares. Airlines companies are not interested in starting flights from Bhopal under this scheme. Although the airport authority is making continuous efforts for this.
