Flyer smuggles Rs 1.5 crore diamonds, held at Mumbai airport

Mumbai: A man from Null Bazar in south Mumbai who smuggled diamonds worth Rs 1.5 crore hiding inside a branded tea powder was detained by the Customs at the Mumbai International airport on Wednesday morning.

The Air Intelligence Unit of Customs on Wednesday intercepted a passenger identified as Mukkim Raza Ashraf Mansuri who arrived from Dubai by a SpiceJet flight.

The examination of his hand baggage resulted in the recovery of a suspicious tea packet of a major brand. On opening the packet, the agency found eight small pouches containing 34 diamonds.

The officials summoned a valuer nominated by the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council at Cargo Clearance Centre at BKC. The diamonds weighed 1,559.68 carats and were valued at Rs 1.49 crore.
