AAI wants multiplex at Chennai airport to be shut

Chennai: After building a multiplex and giving it on contract to a company in one of the two multi-level car parking (MLCP) buildings at Chennai airport, AAI has now issued a notice asking the firm to stop screening films.

The company which started screening movies on five screens in February has approached the court.

The multiplex was planned as part of airport expansion, in a bid to offer the best of amenities for passengers and non-passengers to rake in non-aeronautical revenue. The building Aerohub was inaugurated by civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in February this year.

Sources said the notice has been issued because some problems have arisen due to the functioning of the multiplex at the airport premises.

It is said the viewers who come to the multiplex are taking up space in the parking lot in the multi-level parking building.

A statement from AAI, when the facility was inaugurated, said “The MLCP will complement the mega capacity enhancement in progress at Chennai airport from 17 million passengers per annum to 35 million passengers per annum. The MLCP, constructed on the airport parking lot with 2.5 lakh sqft total built up area, can comfortably accommodate 2,150 cars, including slots for two-wheelers. The six-storied structure flanking the airport metro station as West and East MLCP has mechanised parking slots, electric vehicle charging stations, and a host of commercial amenities being added in a phased manner with multiplex, food courts, retail outlets, kids play zone, etc.” After the MLCP was opened, parking lots have been moved to the building. In the West parking building with 1,428 parking slots for cars, four floors are meant for airport users. In the East building there are only 759 parking slots for cars.
