Akasa Air eyes MP operations, focus on Bhopal for expansion

Bhopal: Akasa Air, the new entrant in the Indian civil aviation sector, is eyeing to start operations in Madhya Pradesh. Highly placed sources told TOI that the airline has shown interest in two destinations within the state: Bhopal and Indore.

Recently, the company officials and Bhopal airport authority officials explored the possibilities of starting operations in the state capital. At present, IndiGo and Air India operate flights from Bhopal airport. IndiGo runs 20 flights daily, while Air India operates 6 flights daily. Bhopal is directly connected to major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Agra, Prayagraj, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Udaipur, Raipur, Goa, Kochi, and Ahmedabad.

There has been a growing demand to connect Bhopal with additional cities. Officials said that Bhopal's top position in customer satisfaction surveys has caught the attention of airlines. “Bhopal is becoming an important centre and airlines have also shown interest,” said an official without quoting his name, adding that Akasa is in contact with Bhopal airport officials. “They have been in communication with our officials. There's a possibility they may visit soon to assess the facilities at Bhopal airport before making a final decision,” the airport official said.

Travellers have been advocating for Bhopal to be connected with cities such as Pune, Kolkata, Patna, Chennai, Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar, among others.

Ramji Awasthi, airport director, said that Pune will be connected with Bhopal in the winter schedule. “We were expecting Pune and Kolkata to be connected with Bhopal. I think we will get a Pune flight in the next schedule,” said Awasthi.
