'Pet' dog found 'gasping for breath' inside parked car at Bengaluru airport

Bengaluru: High drama unfolded outside Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) after a dog was found trapped inside a locked car near the terminal.

The animal was visibly struggling for breath, prompting security personnel to break open the window glass of the car to rescue the animal.

It was found that the owner, a mentally ill man, had parked the vehicle with his pet and entered the airport with the intention of flying to Mumbai. He was later nabbed.

The incident unfolded on Monday evening at KIA when the man, identified as a 38-year-old resident of Papaiah Layout in Kasturinagar, drove to the airport in his black car with a Great Dane in the passenger seat.

“Around 3.50pm, he parked the car on Lane 3 of the departure terminal outside the airport which is a no parking zone, locked the car and walked into the airport. With the car remaining there for over an hour, the CISF personnel including the bomb squad checked the vehicle and were shocked to find a dog unconscious on the back seat,” said an officer attached to the KIA police station.

The CISF team swiftly broke the side window glass of the car and rescued the dog which was in a bad state. The animal was given first aid and was taken to a pet clinic, where it is now known to be safe and out of danger.

Immediate investigation on Monday evening by airport police and CISF found CCTV evidence of the man parking the car and entering Gate number 5 of the airport. Investigators soon found him wandering inside the airport with a flight ticket from Bengaluru to Mumbai in hand.

“He was detained and brought to the police station and it was clear that he wasn’t in a clear state of mind nor did he have any clue about the dog or the car. His family in Kasturinagar was called and they arrived at the police station on Monday night to ascertain that he was mentally ill for a while and had escaped their home in the car on Monday afternoon as they were preparing to transfer him to a mental asylum in city following his condition,” another officer added.
