Six months after its inauguration, Shivamogga Airport will see the first flight touch down on its tarmac on August 31. The Kuvempu Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February this year.

An Indigo flight from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru departing at 9:50 am will be the first plane to land at Shivamogga Airport at 11:05 am. Infrastructure Development Minister MB Patil in a statement said that the flight will receive a water salute, a ceremonial welcome after landing at the airport.

The same flight will depart from Shivamogga at 11:25 am and land in Bengaluru at 12:25 am.

Among the passengers of the first flight will be former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra, Shivamogga district in-charge minister Madhu Bangarappa, minister MB Patil and other legislators from Shivamogga.

Lok Sabha MP BY Raghavendra said that flights connecting Shivamogga to Chennai, Goa and Tirupati will soon start operations.

“Shivamogga will emerge as an International Airport in the next 10 years. The tender process on other routes has been completed. The airlines have to begin operations within 90 days of completion of the tender process. I am confident that other routes will start within a month,” Raghavendra said.

The airport has been built 15 km outside Shivamogga at Sogane with an investment of Rs 449 crore. The airport has been constructed even to accommodate Airbus 320 flights.
