IndiGo Passenger Arrest For Smoking On Flight To Mumbai

On August 3, 2023, a passenger aboard an IndiGo Airlines flight from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai was arrested for smoking a cigarette. Upon arrival in India, the passenger was quickly turned over to the authorities and was immediately remanded into custody.

In India, passengers who take part in any activity to endanger the safety of an aircraft's occupants or the crew are eligible to receive up to two years in prison. The perpetrator may also face a fine of up to 1 million rupees, or roughly US $12,000.

Smoking on aircraft can pose a significant risk to safety onboard an aircraft due to the nature of smoking involving open flames. Authorities around the world have banned and have strictly punished smoking on aircraft for decades.

Kawraj Tagat Singh, a 26-year-old man from Rajasthan, entered the aircraft's lavatory en route from Dubai to Mumbai and proceeded to smoke. Upon departing from the restroom, the smell of smoke quickly permeated the entire cabin, alerting the cabin crew who quickly rushed to action.

After a brief investigation, Singh was quickly identified as the perpetrator of the event. When confronted about his actions, the perpetrator quickly turned over his cigarette pack and lighter.
