In a significant move towards sustainable aviation, 86 airports across India are making strides in adopting green energy solutions. Out of these, 55 airports have achieved a remarkable milestone by ensuring that 100% of their energy consumption comes from renewable sources.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has emphasized the importance of reducing carbon emissions at airports, which primarily stem from conventional energy sources. By replacing non-renewable energy with green alternatives, these airports are actively working to reduce their carbon footprint.
To further the cause of environmental conservation, MoCA has advised all operational airports with scheduled operations and developers of upcoming Greenfield Airports to strive for Carbon Neutrality & Net Zero. This entails a commitment to utilize green energy as a crucial step in achieving sustainability goals.
The trend of focusing on renewable and green energy is not limited to India; airports worldwide are increasingly prioritizing this transition. International airports like Heathrow, Bristol, and London Gatwick in the United Kingdom, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Athens in Greece, Oslo in Norway, Brussels in Belgium, Budapest in Hungary, Copenhagen in Denmark, San Diego in the United States, Vancouver in Canada, and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates have already achieved Carbon Neutrality through a range of measures, including the adoption of renewable energy sources.
