Lucknow: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will extend the existing apron – the tarmac or the area of an airport where planes are parked – at Ayodhya airport to accommodate four more aircraft. Currently, the airport has constructed a tarmac to handle four Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 at any given time. The decision to expand the tarmac was taken following the recommendations of DGCA and requests from airlines.
When operational, the Ayodhya airport will handle passengers coming from various destinations, primarily for southern and eastern states. Once extended, the apron area will accommodate a total of eight aircraft having 180 seating capacity each.
The airport’s first-phase construction is expected to complete by October 31, following which AAI will approach DGCA for an operational licence. By December month, the airlines are expected to operate from Ayodhya airport on domestic routes. Meanwhile, two airlines have approached AAI to share details about the Ayodhya airport infrastructure, as they will accordingly invest in setting up their passenger check-in booth, boarding stairs, ferry bus and other facilities.
