Pune: Nishant Khanna recently came from Delhi to Pune on a business trip and was taken aback by the foul smell seconds after he stepped into the Pune airport building from the runway. "It was emanating from the washroom and followed me till the exit gate. It totally put me off from using the washroom even though I wanted to. I went to the Aero Mall and used their facility," he said.
There have been frequent complaints about poor upkeep of washrooms at the Pune airport. Flyers also said that there is no consistency in the cleanliness of the facility.
"I would not say that the washrooms are never clean, however most of the time, there is a foul smell in the facility. The housekeeping staff is constantly at work there but something seems amiss in terms of hygiene. The authorities need to seriously look into this," frequent flyer Karthik Angekar said.
Pune, with its IT, manufacturing and educational hub status, has a high demand for air services is high. At present, the Pune airport has a footfall of around 23,000 passengers each day and at least 183 daily flight movements.
There are two security hold areas, in addition to the one for international flights. The washrooms tend to get dirty during the peak hours in the mornings and in the late evenings.
