Mumbai: A 23-year-old man from Karnataka was arrested by customs for carrying 2 kg gold worth Rs 1.1 crore at the city airport.
The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs on Wednesday intercepted Hamdaan Shafi, a resident of Udupi, after he arrived from Jeddah. He was intercepted after he crossed the green channel without declaring anything.
The officials carried a search of his baggage resulting in recovery of 10 tolas fine gold. During preliminary inquiries, he told officials that one Imtiaz met him outside Jeddah airport and requested him to take the parcel to Mumbai as it was very important for his ailing mother. He said he was promised Rs 10,000 for the job.
